Mesmerism, a curative technique pioneered by Franz Anton Mesmer in the 1770s, was subject to much debate.  He premiered his scientific notions of animal magnetism in Vienna in the early 1770s and again in Paris years later.  His methods, drawing much from cosmology, were often frowned upon and not accepted as necessarily scientific in the Vienna Faculty of Medicine; he was accused of being a charlatan and heretic due to the almost erotic nature of his astrological healing techniques, which required physical contact leading to a ‘crisis,’ a breakthrough point for his patients.
